Middle East Background Reading

I would like to share a list of background reading on the modern Middle East. This list is by no means exhaustive, but provides a basic understanding of a very complex and fascinating region.

  • William Spencer, Global Studies: The Middle East (Iowa: McGraw-Hill/Dushkin, 2006).
  • Charles Smith, Palestine and the Arab-Israeli Conflict (Boston: Bedford/St. Martin’s, 2001).
  • Ian Bickerton and Carla Klausner, A Concise History of the Arab-Israeli Conflict (New Jersey: Prentice Hall, 2002).
  • M.E. Yapp, The Near East Since the First World War: A History to 1995 (Harlow: Longman Pub Group, 1996).

Please feel free to comment and share what books you have found particularly useful.
